Most garage door cable and roller repair calls we take in Lewisville start the same way - the door moved fine yesterday. That is normal. The components that fail are load-bearing, and load-bearing parts fail suddenly rather than gradually. In Lewisville, hail season and 100-degree summers punish panels and seals, which is why we carry the parts for it on the van rather than ordering them in.

Two cables run from the bottom brackets, up the sides, and wind onto drums at each end of the torsion shaft. They are what actually carries the door's weight to the spring. If one lets go, the door drops on that side, jams in the track and comes off the rails - which is why a cable failure and an off-track door usually arrive as one call.

Anywhere in Lewisville or Flower Mound, Carrollton, Coppell, Highland Village the visit and the written estimate cost nothing. If you decide not to go ahead after seeing the estimate, you owe nothing.

What you are probably seeing

A cable warns you before it goes. Run your eye along its length: broken strands stand out from the lay of the wire like whiskers, usually near the bottom. Compare the two sides - one slack while the other is tight means a cable has already slipped its drum. And if the door has started closing crooked, it is past the warning stage.

If any of that matches, a technician can diagnose it on site in about ten minutes. We do not guess at it down the phone, and we do not charge to look.

Please do not keep using it

The bottom bracket is the one fitting on a garage door that carries the entire spring load, and on most doors there is a warning label on it saying so. Undo that bolt with the counterbalance still wound and the whole system releases at once, through whatever is in the way. This is not a cautious-and-you-will-be-fine job.

Leave it where it is and unplug the opener if the temptation is strong. Almost every large garage door repair we quote started as a small one that somebody kept operating for another two days.

Need the car? Pull the red cord with the door all the way down, never partway, and lift steadily. If it will not move easily with two hands, it is not going to, and forcing it is how people are injured.

What a week of waiting does

People put this off, and it is worth being straight about where that goes. None of the following is unusual - it is the ordinary sequence, and we see it in Lewisville every week.

  1. Rollers take the track with themA roller that has stopped turning drags, and what it drags is not a consumable.
  2. The door stops sitting squareOnce it is out of true, everything above it is working against the frame rather than in it.
  3. A frayed cable is a warning, not a faultIt is the easiest point in the whole sequence to deal with, and it is the one most people miss.
  4. When it lets go, the door goes with itThe corner drops, the door jams, and what was one part becomes several.

The visit and the written estimate are free, so finding out where you stand costs you nothing at all. That is the whole reason to call early rather than late.

Keeping it from happening again

Most of what shortens a door's life in Lewisville is preventable, and none of it takes long.

Twice a year, put a lithium or silicone garage door lubricant on the hinges, the roller stems and the spring coils. Not WD-40, which is a solvent and strips what is already there, and not grease on the track, which collects grit and makes it worse.

Once a year, test the balance. Close the door, pull the release cord, and lift it by hand to waist height. A correctly balanced door stays where you put it. If it drops or climbs, the spring is out and the opener is carrying weight it should not be.

Every few months, test the safety reversal. Lay something solid flat under the door and close it. It should touch, stop and go back up.

A Lewisville home of the kind we are called out to most days

Does the brand on your door matter?

Less than the industry likes to imply. Torsion hardware is torsion hardware, and a spring, a cable and a roller are the same components whoever stamped the panel. Where the brand does matter is parts availability and a handful of proprietary designs.

BrandNotes
CraftsmanBuilt on Chamberlain internals for most of their production run, so the gear kits and boards are shared and readily available.
LiftMaster / ChamberlainThe same units under two names. Gear kits, logic boards and Security+ 2.0 remotes are stocked, and the older 315MHz heads can still be paired.
GenieScrew-drive and belt-drive heads. Intellicode remotes and carriage assemblies are the usual failure points, and both are parts rather than a reason to change the opener.
Overhead Door / RaynorStandard torsion hardware on the residential lines - nothing unusual to source.
Wayne DaltonThe TorqueMaster counterbalance is a spring inside the tube rather than on it, and it needs its own tools and its own parts. We carry them.
Chamberlain myQWi-Fi hubs and the app side fail more often than the mechanics do. Usually a re-pair rather than a replacement.

If yours is not there, it is almost certainly still standard torsion hardware. Read us the badge on the door or the model number off the opener when you call and we will confirm before the van is loaded.

What people get told that is not true

A frayed cable can wait until it breaks.

It can, but what it breaks is not just the cable. The door drops on that side, jams in the track and usually comes off the rails, so a cable job becomes a track and hinge job. Frayed strands are the warning, and they are worth acting on.

Rollers are rollers.

Builder-grade plastic rollers have no bearings and are finished in five to seven years. Nylon rollers on sealed ball bearings run quieter, drag far less on the track and last several times longer for a small difference in parts cost.

You only need to change the one that failed.

Cables are replaced in pairs. They have carried the same load for the same years, and the drums have to be set equally or the door will never sit level in the opening.

None of that is unique to Lewisville. It is simply what happens when a door is quoted over the phone by somebody who has not seen it, and it is the reason we do not give prices before a technician has stood in front of the door.

Why most jobs finish on the first visit

The difference between a job finished today and a job finished on Thursday is almost always whether the right part was on the van when it arrived. So the van is loaded for what Lewisville actually breaks rather than for a national average.

Springs in the common sizes, lift cables, drums, rollers, hinges, brackets, opener gear kits, remotes, safety sensors and weather seal all travel with the technician. Panels and complete doors are ordered, and we tell you that at the estimate rather than on the day.

It is also why the description you give on the phone matters. Tell us what the door is doing, what it sounds like, whether it is a single or a double and roughly how old it is, and the van leaves already carrying the answer.

Our coverage

The radius is drawn around how fast a van can actually get to you, not around how much of the map we would like to claim. In practice that is Denton County and these neighborhoods and towns.

If you are on the edge of it, say where you are when you call and you will get a straight answer about timing before anything is booked.

The Lewisville garage, specifically

Most garages in Lewisville are 1990s and 2000s subdivision homes with two and three-car garages. That single fact drives more of what goes wrong than the weather does, because it sets the door's weight, and the door's weight sets everything else - spring size, cable gauge, how hard the opener works.

A double door in Lewisville runs 130 to 190 pounds, more if it is insulated. That weight is cancelled by the spring, carried by two cables, and steered by rollers in a steel channel. Take any one of those three out and the other two fail within days.

Around Old Town and Valley Vista we see the consequences of that chain often enough to recognize them on the phone. A description of the noise usually tells us which of the three went first, and what else it has already damaged.

Which is the practical reason to call somebody who works this area rather than a dispatch number: the diagnosis starts before the van leaves.

How we work

One technician, one van, one job at a time, and the same process whether it is two in the afternoon or two in the morning.

The fault is confirmed on the door rather than guessed at down a phone line. The work is written down before anything is touched. Nothing is added afterwards - if something else is found once the door is apart, it is shown to you and agreed separately.

The door is cycled, balanced and its safety reversal tested before we leave, and the work is warranted in writing. That is the whole of it, across Denton County.

What Lewisville does to each part

Hail season and 100-degree summers punish panels and seals. Split by component, the effect is not evenly distributed:

PartWhat the local climate does to it
Torsion springSurface corrosion removes section, stress concentrates there, and the spring fails short of its cycle rating.
Lift cablesRust starts at the bottom bracket end, closest to the floor, and works up the lay of the wire.
RollersGrit and moisture together destroy unsealed bearings; sealed nylon rollers are largely immune.
Bottom sealHardens, cracks, and stops sealing - after which the weather is inside the garage rather than outside it.
OpenerSuffers indirectly. Every one of the above makes the door heavier to move, and the nylon drive gear is what pays for it.

None of it is exotic and none of it needs a special product. It needs looking at twice a year, which is the part most people in Lewisville skip.

Questions we get asked in Lewisville

Is the work guaranteed?

Yes, in writing, on parts and labor. If the same fault returns inside the warranty period we come back and put it right at no charge.

Do you work on my brand of door?

Yes - LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman, Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton and the rest. The mechanisms are common across brands and we carry parts for all of them.

Do you cover Flower Mound as well?

Yes - Flower Mound, Carrollton, Coppell, Highland Village and the wider Denton County area are all inside our normal service radius.

Can you come out today in Lewisville?

Usually, yes. We hold same-day slots for Lewisville and the surrounding towns, and a door stuck open or a car shut in goes to the front of the list.

Is it safe to use the door until you arrive?

If a spring or cable has failed, no. Leave it down and do not force it. The counterbalance holds a great deal of stored energy and it can let go without warning.

Should I replace both sides or just the broken one?

A roller that has seized takes the track with it, so a roller replacement that is left too long turns into a track repair. If we are already there for a cable, changing the rollers at the same time costs the parts and almost no extra labor.
